About the culture of paying for tour kouhai.

Hi! I have something I don’t really understand.

So I have recently moved to Tokyo. Lovely, I must say.

The thing is, I know paying for someone else here is normal as a senpai. But in what measure do I have to give it back? While I can play the gaijin card, I still want to do it right at least to a degree.

I wouldn’t worry about this too much, but the ammount the HR lady paid for me seems a bit big. And I don’t think it goes out as company expenses.

I mean drinks from the vending machines and a meal at a restaurant during lunch break are one thing since those are pretty cheap, but she even bought me curtains? One single day got to like 5000 yen. I am not yet used to yen but that seems substantial for someone only one year older than me compared to the salary I would guess she has.

Getting spoiled sure is great, but I don’t know how to pay it back.

Even when I say it is my turn to pay, she is still faster. (May be because I have no idea what I am doing when I am paying)

This is by no means a problem or something that worries me, but I want to understand what is going on and when does my turn come from a cultural standpoint.

Thanks!
