Investing cash without 住民票 outside of Japan

Hello!

My wife is a Japanese citizen and has a decent chunk of cash from her parents just sitting in her bank. We live in the US and won’t touch that money for at least 5+ years. Wanting to get more info about investing options for that money and brokerage recommendations (I’m currently looking at InteractiveBrokers)

Investment Options

– 生命保険 – My MIL suggested life insurance – it seems like they convert to USD which I want to avoid considering current exchange rates

– DCA into Japan’s SP 500 equivalent

– DCA into SP 500 – want to avoid this because this involves converting Yen to USD which doesn’t seem great

I’m looking for something I can manage relatively passively and be able to do from the US. I also have no experience with doing taxes in Japan – I assume as long as I don’t sell there shouldn’t be any headaches there?

Edit: To clarify – we’re in Japan now, and I want to get everything figured out (accounts opened/money transferred etc. while we’re here)
