I will be moving to Japan for a study abroad program and was wondering how scholarships in Japan usually work. The most popular scholarships all say that the scholarship money is received through monthly stipends. Does this mean that the money is directly given to the recipient to put in a bank account and use later for any general use, or is it kept with the university to specifically use for tuition, housing, food plans, etc. ?
I am from the USA, and when we are given scholarships here, it’s usually given through a check (or directly entered into the school’s payment system) with the total amount for the year. This also means that the scholarship money must be used for tuition or housing only.
Just trying to figure out the differences between the two countries’ scholarship systems.
