Japanese reading help

Hi all!

First and foremost, I apologize for asking this similar question that has been asked many times. Just hoping someone can give me advice on my Japanese skill level.

I am born and raised in America and my parents are from Japan. I moved to Japan last month (never lived here before except under a year) because I secured a job I couldn’t resist. I can speak fluently and pretty confident in keigo but my reading is probably around 60-80%. I can’t write for shit. I can type and converse in Japanese without making too many kanji mistakes because I can translate stuff I don’t know but I can’t read business level book.

Question: is there any Japanese classes or lessons that you would suggest that focuses primarily on reading? I’m not even sure what level of kanji I would be at. I’m guessing I’m elementary level and basically read kanji by how it looks. Just want someone to evaluate my reading and place me into a class to help me get to business level.

Thank you in advance!

  1. Most classes are not going to focus on only reading. And if your skills in other areas (speaking, listening, etc.) are much higher, you may find yourself frustrated with the pacing of classes.

I would recommend you find a tutor for one on one lessons with someone who can tailor the lessons to your specific needs. There are lots of professional teachers online on websites like italki. (I mention italki because that’s the one I use but there are others)

For example, my spoken Japanese is my weakest skill. My teacher on italki is a professional who has completely made a whole curriculum for me to help me more quickly and grammatically accurately speak in different situations. We don’t bother with things like kanji practice since I do pretty well on my own.

You can also try resources like wanikani. It might help you remember readings and it gives context examples
