Playing full band in an enclosed space

I went to my kid’s school today as they were playing their instruments for us. This is a marching band of 10 kids with a conductor (with whistle), a bunch of big drums, keyboards, etc. I’ve seen them perform outside for festivals and such before.

Today they had us sit down in the 音楽室 – it was my first time there. It’s about \~10m x 10m & the door and windows were closed.

I had to leave as soon as they started playing – the whistle to start was painful and then the drums started going. It was incredibly loud from even outside the door. The 教頭先生 came by while I was standing outside and watching through the window. I told him it’s way too loud, that it was dangerous and that I’m concerned. His response was, “it’s the music room…”

I’m shocked at how ridiculous this is. It’s dangerous for the kids’ hearing and that’s where they practice as well. I saw another class doing the same thing but in their classroom, which also seems like a terrible idea. Am I overreacting?

I’m wondering if I can find something from a Japanese organisation that I could send to the school that would convince them that this is a terrible idea & bad for the health of their students. At a minimum, they should be wearing ear protection, which is what I’m going to require for my child moving forward.
