I lived in Japan for about 10 years, then brought my family to the US and started a small business here. We are now seriously planning a move back to Japan and I am trying to figure out how to do it while running my business remotely. My spouse is Japanese so immigration is not a problem.
The big logistic question is where we would live. I suppose we could look for a dirt-cheap akiya in the middle of nowhere and pay cash for it, but we would prefer to be somewhere more convenient to big city life. Is it possible to rent a family-sized apartment or house in the Tokyo area without proof of local income? Has anyone here gone through a similar process? I could set up a paper company in Japan to pay myself a local salary but I’m not sure how necessary or helpful that would be…

Does your wife have any family that could act as a guarantor? While we were engaged my wife was here in Japan and I was abroad so she took the lead in finding our apartment and she didn’t have income at the time and I would be coming over in a similar situation as you. We used family as a guarantor at the time.
