Do I need to change my car’s number plate after moving?

edit: At first I got an overwhelming, “yes you should change it” response. But it’s interesting to see the anecdotes trickle in about people not actually changing it, which is originally why I wrote this post. I think to be on the safe side I will change it!

I’m moving soon, and it’s far enough away that the area written on my number plate will be different.

At first I thought I definitely had to change it because there is a large fine if you don’t, but from a quick Google, it seems like some people just don’t change it and keep their original number plate – and the police are pretty lax / don’t really come after you for it?

Just wondering what I should be doing in this scenario. The process to change it sounds kind of annoying (and also $$) so I wouldn’t mind skipping it if possible.
