TIL S&B intentionally markets shichimi togarashi as nanani togarashi outside of Japan to avoid confusion between shichimi and ichimi

I always thought it was strange that shichimi was labeled nanami in the US. I just sort of accepted it and thought maybe it was just a different reading or dialect. I lived in Osaka for years and always called it shichimi so I thought maybe that was just kansaiben.

I got curious today and researched it and apparently S&B intentionally labels it nanami in markets outside of Japan to avoid confusion between the words shichimi and ichimi for non-native speakers.
