Words/Sentences that use both Hiragana and Katakana

Hello, so I’m new to learning Japanese. I’m still practicing using both the Hiragana and Katakana characters and in my studies I came across the word for “eraser,” which according to my textbook is “keshigomu,” and according to my textbook the “ke shi,” is written in Hiragana and the “go mu,” is written in Katakana.

So my question is, is it often that you will see words or sentences that use both Hiragana and Katakana characters together?

From my limited knowledge I was lead to believe that Katakana was only used mainly for names or when someone was trying to exclaim something important.
