Planning a solo trip to Japan. Any tips?

I’m currently planning a solo trip to Japan. This will be my first time in Japan and I’m quite excited about it! I’m also a little bit anxious about it, mainly due to the language barrier. I’m hoping I’ll manage to do the most basic things (order at a restaurant etc).

I’m looking for tips from people who have way more experience than me. Here are some quick info that’ll hopefully help people who wants to give me some advice:

* I’m 32M
* I’ll be staying in Tokyo for the most part, but I also want to visit 1 or 2 cities outside of Tokyo (Kyoto or some others)
* I’m going to be there for 2 weeks
* I’m super flexible about dates etc, but right now I’m thinking either April (going to avoid Golden Week), mid-May or October. I really want to avoid the summer because I know it’s super hot and humid

These are the main questions that I’ve:

1. What would you pick between April, May and October?
2. Which cities should I check out outside of Tokyo?
3. What’s a good neighborhood I could stay at? Feel free to list a few
4. Do you know any good hotels? I was looking at Airbnbs too, but as a solo travel I think having an hotel with a reception that I can talk to might make things easier
5. What’re some fun activities I could do on my own? Could be anything from historical monuments, museums or whatever
6. I know this is stupid, but I’m scared by the idea of eating alone in restaurants. Do people find that weird in Japan? Also, what’re some cool places that are great for solo eaters?

That’s about it, I think. Thanks everyone!
