Malicious data harvesting mini rant

TLDR; take your passport renewal photo with your phone.

Went to get a digital photo for my foreign passport renewal, needed a light-coloured background and no software editing.

Couldn’t change the background in the booth like you can back home, and the only option for a different colour was ¥200 more and would have edited the photo. Figured that would be rejected, so I went with the light-blue.

Needed to install an app to get my photo.

Rejected for background colour. Passport agency then species that ‘light-coloured’ means white, cream, or light-grey.

You can probably tell where I’m from by now, because my spelling is correct.

I’m down ¥1,000. Next stop camera shop. Their website implies it’s ¥3,000 for data. In for a penny, in for a pound (more clues). Except it’s ¥3,400.

Great, got it done. Next step use code to download data.

Oh, they want my e-mail, full name, date of birth, phone number, and address. To download a file. That I paid ¥3,400 for. And they gave me a code to get it.

Shady nonsense
