Renewing a Visa while leaving a job

Hey all,

I was just notified that my renewed visa is ready to pick up at immigration. At the same time, I’ve decided to leave my current contracted position which ends in October.

I was asked to notify the company about whether or not I’d renew my contract by the end of this month, and unless I risk going to Shinagawa and being late for work, it looks like I won’t be able to take time off until next month.

I don’t mind waiting to pick up my new residence card unless announcing my intention to leave the company before I do causes issues. My current visa expires before my contract ends, so there shouldn’t be any issues. Nevertheless, the paranoid part of me can’t help but be concerned.

Does anyone have any experience with these sorts of situations? What do you recommend I do?

Since my new visa has been approved my currently company has no power to revoke the application…right?

Thanks for all your thoughts.

  1. As long as you don’t miss the deadline to pick up your card, there shouldn’t be any issues in going when you can take the time off. Even if you somewhat exceed the posted timeline, immigration will generally be flexible / not particularly care (though anecdotally you may face questions/scrutiny if you leave it too long). It is of course best to get the card within the indicated timeframe. You can also ask a judicial scrivener to pick it up for you, though that would of course cost money.

Your employer cannot revoke your SOR, but it remains your responsibility to inform immigration once you have left your employer.
