First time in Japan: Ueno or Ikebukuro stay?

Hi guys,

I will travel to Tokio with my wife( 30m, 30f ) by the end of April for 10 days, and I am really wondering what should I choose..

Let me explain: what we want is a good commucation, Japan vibes and lively night. However, we are not into clubbing at all – we would like to just admire night city, buy a few drinks and be sure that the last train/metro is not a problem. That is why I am ripped appart between Ikebukuro and Ueno. Basically, Ikebukure seems to be.. fun. A bit special, with a bit of dark atmosphere, but lively at night and full of attractions. On the other hand, there is Ueno, which (as i could read) is more traditional, gives the feeling of “Japan” , is full of friendly locals (it is a great advantage) and seems to have “izakayas climate” which sounds fun. We don’t want to sacrifice the modern and lively especially at night Japan for “traditional” , and on the other hand I would be disappointed after realizing that I missed some local bars and izakayas full of friendly neighbours with unique atmosphere, which I won’t be able to experience anywhere else (I feel like Ueno and Asakusa is full of them). Could you please help me with my decision, give some tips/informations or eventually tell my if understanding is right or wrong.
Thanks!
