Like, it occurred to me while playing trials of mana in Japanese because the English voice acting is awful. The Japanese is fine but every character fits the usual tropes. However, the beastmen talked in that typical tough guy voice and went 技 技. I have been hearing different voice actors doing that same tough guy voice saying the same thing since the 80s.
A tough guy from the 80s in America meanwhile would not talk anything like a tough guy today. Is there more divergence that I’m not picking up on because of my lack of fluency? Or has Japanese been rather culturally stagnant over the years? Or is this an example of Japanese homogeneity?

It’s super weird for you to make assumptions about a language you don’t speak and claim that a culture you’re not a part of is stagnant based on voice acting alone. You are very likely not picking up on nuance because of your lack of fluency. There will be similarities in the voices because of a variety of factors, including culture and things like studio norms, professional conventions, character archetypes, geography/regional dialect, etc. It could even be the same actors doing similar media in some cases. Not uncommon to see voice actors have extremely long careers, and if they’re good at a particular type of voice, they might be asked to do it a bunch of times.
