Getting to Kyoto from Tokyo without flying or the bullet train

Hi all,

Traveling to Tokyo in May and on a limited budget.

How can I get to Kyoto without spending $150 on a one way train ticket and without spending the same on a flight?

I’m wanting to follow this route

Tokyo —> Kyoto
Kyoto —> Osaka (train)
Osaka —> Tokyo (flight)
