I’ve been wanting to do a study abroad and teaching abroad in Japan for the past few years but my plans got a little sidetracked with covid and all that. Earlier this year I realized I missed the deadline to apply to JET and I have to wait until next year, but I did want to go to Japan before then for a period of time so I’ve been looking into language schools for a short term of 3 months.
I’ve been looking into Gogonihon and I’m interested in KAI language school for the upcoming October 2024 term, but now I’m seeing that theres mixed reviews about it plus the cost would be a little bit more expensive than others (¥315,000 or $2100). I wanted to know if there were any cheaper and also better schooling options, I’m a beginner and want to start self studying before going to do the program.
I’m 24 years old right now and I wanted to go to Japan before I’m 26 since I’ve been planning to do an abroad term since I was around 21, but covid and life happened, so thats my goal right now. I also live away from home so I have to factor in rent ($725) while I’m away as well. I’m also thinking I can do an April 2025 term to save up more money if I had to (i probably have to) but I do want to aim for doing it in 2024 since I already wasted enough time.
The questions I had were:
1. When you went to a language school, how are the costs split up? Or are they all upfront?
2. Do most schools offer housing for students? Is it included in the total tuition costs?
3. How much money did you save up for the trip and for how long? How much did you spend while there?
4. What language schools in the Tokyo area are good? As I said earlier I was looking into KAI. I was also looking into the Intercultural Institute of Japan Akihabara but I also saw mixed reviews about it. I’m also open to schools outside of Tokyo but I do want to be in a city area.
Any advice would be awesome, thanks :3
