Teaching English in the long term?

Hello everyone,

I got downvoted quite a bit in the JET programme subreddit, so I wanted to come here for opinions and advice. I’m truly not meaning to sound ignorant with these questions!

I wanted to get some general advice / opinions / stories on continuing teaching after the JET programme.

This is all just for forethought and planning, as I am hoping to go back to school to earn a BA in English. If living in Japan just isn’t for me, my backup plan is to teach English to immigrants / refugees in my home state. I am a very “plan things out” type person before I make any big decisions in the future, and am wondering if teaching English after JET and staying in Japan is a viable career choice.

I understand I have not been yet and am in no way putting all my eggs in one basket before seeing how everything actually goes; I more so just wanted to get a feel for how getting teaching jobs after JET is usually perceived and how it has worked for others.

I have always loved studying English and have wanted to be a teacher for a long time, but life got in the way and I’m in a position to now take my education seriously. I genuinely want to help others with this career choice and am very enthusiastic about learning and helping other humans be the best they can be!

I will be 31 by the time I graduate so I really just want to take this time to get opinions where I can!

Again, I understand I haven’t even applied and am nowhere close to that step, just taking about the “what ifs” in this scenario 🙂

Thank you everyone!

Edit: thank you to everyone for your kind comments here. I’m definitely going to be looking into getting an MA and not just a BA to increase my chances of teaching English more permanently should I end up enjoying the work. Thank you everyone!
