Lighthearted/casual background shows?

皆さん、元気ですか? 勉強することはどうですか? 🙂 I want to incorporate more Japanese in my daily life. I often like watching comfort shows that are a little silly and don’t require too much commitment. (The Office, adult cartoons, reality tv.) however, I have a problem where if I tune into a Japanese program (animation, Terrace House, game shows) I have to make a whole study hour out of it. I like doing this, but I also want to have something playing in Japanese and not feel so committed to it/self judgemental about not understanding everything. Does anyone have a real easy comfort show they like to put on in the background/when studying or when going about daily stuff? ありがとうございます!!

  1. If you like anime ‘My senpai is annoying’ is pretty good. I love my warm blanket comfort anime

  2. I recently finished “Stay Tuned” on Netflix, it’s five episodes long, super cute and funny. I definitely recommend it. It’s also live action.
Another good one that is longer is “Midnight Diner” also on Netflix.

  3. I never see it mentioned here but 月曜から夜ふかし is really funny. You can find tons of clips of it on YouTube. It’s a late night show on Monday’s and they have short (about 10 minutes) clips of different places or things in Japan. The two hosts comment on it.

Another good one is 相席食堂, it’s on Japanese Netflix. Each episode has a celebrity go to some random town and walk around to different restaurants and eat and talk with people there. The show has 2 hosts who sometimes stop and make comments about it.

  4. For non-stress silly shows that you really need to pay a whole lot of attention to and still get the giggles I suggest “Wotakoi” and “Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun”. They’re slice-of-live shoujo but either turn some of the stereotypes in shoujo around or use them solely for comedic effect (i.e., the “miscommunication” trope doesn’t create angst, it creates hilarious situations).

“Gakuen Babysitters” is also one of my comfort shows. Both the premise and the characters are simple, but they provoke emotion. And the kids make everything cute.

“How to Keep a Mummy” is also just silly cuteness (disclaimer: haven’t finished this one).

Not sure what you’d enjoy, but these are the ones I find myself going back to when I need a break.

    Best of luck!

  5. Conan is pretty good as background noise. The story barely changes from episode to episode, so it’s easy to tune in or out as you please.

  6. 孤独のグルメ(Solitary Gourmet) is one of my favorites to have on in the background. It’s just a traveling businessman finding places to eat in the cities he’s visiting. After the episode is over they cut to a real segment of somebody visiting that same restaurant. I think there’s 7 or 8 seasons on Netflix and a couple specials.

  7. The easiest anime shows I ever watched to understand Japanese are children show.

Animes like Precure, Aikatsu, Prichan are really easy to understand.

  8. Samurai Gourmet on Netflix – it’s live action about a retired guy who goes out to eat a different thing every episode. And occasionally gets inspired by his make-believe samurai imaginary friend. Very chill, lots of close up images of tasty food and “aaaaah” sounds of the old dude enjoying his beer.
