Where would you go for an overnight trip that’s not Osaka/Kyoto/Tokyo?

Currently planning a trip (March – April 2025); abridged version is we will be staying in Kyoto/Osaka, shipping our luggage to Shibuya, and since the luggage shipment is expected to take about 2 days, we figured we’d hit another town somewhere else for a one-to-two-nighter trip.

Originally, we were thinking Okinawa or Hokkaido. However, Okinawa sounds like it may not be worth it, and Hokkaido, though beautiful, we’d need quite a bit of winter gear. I’ve been on the search for some inspiration, and heard great things about Fukuoka, Kagoshima, and Kobe.

Where would you go for an overnight trip? What town/area did you have a great time exploring that may not make all the online blogs? What town did you visit that had the best food or music scene? Which one was simply just *a fun place* to be?

For context, my friend and I are big anime/manga fans, love experiencing the food and culture (though, we wouldn’t consider ourselves historians), love the outdoors and hiking, plan to visit lots of shrines/temples, and love karaoke and the overall music scene. We also love unique experiences like kimono photoshoots and samurai experiences, but are going for ourselves and not social media so it doesn’t need to be where the influencers go.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Depending on locations, might even make some day trips from Shibuya.
