International relations?

As a JET ALT, there was/is a lot of emphasis from JET/CLAIR that we are cultural ambassadors, but my experience at a high school is that the only ambassadoring we actual have support to do is within the school. We get zero “work” hours to do activities in the community. Of course, in our own time, wohoo go for it. So my question is: do any other JETs actually have schools that might say something like, sure—take the afternoon off to participate in a community function, or sure, take a couple hours to go to a Japanese class in the afternoon, or sure – use Mondays mornings to volunteer with the Lions Club? I can of course do all this using my personal annual leave days, but I’m asking about work hours.
