First international flight Home.

I’m going home for vacation for the first time, and this is my second international flight. I don’t know much about check-in times, so I need some assurance if 2 hours and 20 minutes will be enough for check-in. I’ll be taking a domestic flight from KIX Osaka to Narita, which will arrive at 8:40 AM on a weekday. Do you think I can make my next international flight at 11 AM, considering they’re on different carriers? Or should I come to Tokyo a day earlier? This would cost extra money because I’d have to book a hotel for the night. As a student, every penny is valuable, so I need help and suggestions.

  1. Is your kix-Nrt flight on the same ticket as your connecting international ticket or are they separate itineraries? If the same, your baggage should be checked in to your final destination (you don’t need to collect it at Narita). In this case you should be fine. If you have two itineraries you will most likely need to pick up and recheck your luggage at Narita. You need to verify this and be sure of whether you are simply transiting through Narita (simple) or re-checking in (more time consuming).
Edit: sorry didn’t read the “different carriers” part. This probably means a separate itinerary but not necessarily. Sometimes they can check you through. It’s worth checking beforehand.

  2. 2h20min is enough time, but you need to figure that it will take 20-30min to get your luggage and another 10-15 to transfer terminals. Now you are down to ~1h40m which is still enough time but a little tight if you are new to this.

Also you are on separate itineraries, with the problem being if your domestic flight is delayed you are likely SOL for your international flight depending on the type of ticket you got.

Anyhow, chances you would be fine BUT if you have a non refundable/changeable international ticket you might want to get to Tokyo the night before.

  3. If you stay with your tickets, when you go into the int’l terminal and find your airline, GO DIRECTLY to one of the helpful people who manage the lines and show them your ticket

They will know immediately if you need to be fast-tracked through, or if you are okay, and will lead you into the correct line so you don’t waste time with mixups

  4. IMO, 2h20m is less than I’d be comfortable with, but I tend to be overly cautious. On separate itenaries, I’d usually have at least 4h between them, or more.

The published arrival time is when the wheels are back on the tarmac. In some cases, they still need time to taxi to the terminal, and some airports can also take a really long time before your luggage becomes available too. Flights do get delayed as well. I’d rather sit around at an airport for a couple more hours, then have to buy a new flight if I miss the connection.

  5. Did you book this using momondo or something?

2 hours should be enough. I’ve done it.
However, If something gets fucked, like luggage takes a long time (probably not since it’s domestic) you might have a problem.

    I’m sure you’ll be fine!

    Have a safe trip
