Conflicted: JET interview or dispatch for a gap year

Hi guys, earlier today I got a successful invite to an interview for the JET programme (UK) at the end of January. I’ve just finished my master’s and want to take a gap-year before a PhD, to teach English in Japan for a year- I have a TEFL certificate etc.

However, I’m not sure what I should do; I’ve been offered a placement by a dispatch company- I’d be flying over some time during Mid-March. Now, I’m aware of the reputation of these companies (I’ve lurked in this sub for several months), but as someone who is only planning to stay with them for 1 year, what would you guys recommend?

I’ve done some reading on the acceptance rates post-interview for JET and they seem to vary from around 20%-50% -ish (correct me if I’m wrong). I think I have a decently strong application, but I’m not sure whether to leave it to chance or not, as if I’m rejected, I don’t think I’d want to wait for the following annual cycle to reapply.

So to summarise: Take the chance with the JET interview (but if I am rejected I probably won’t do the year in Japan) or, go with the confirmed dispatch placement I currently have, starting from the 2024 academic year, for 1 year.

Thanks guys.
