Received very expensive gift and unsure what to do

*THANK YOU FOR THE FEEDBACK*

Hi all,
A friend in my kendo dojo got me a pair of custom Nike shoes that I found out were around Â¥20,000. I had mentioned that my shoe size is 33 so it’s difficult to buy shoes in Japan, and he (completely unprompted, no occasion) got me these. They’re admittedly nice sneakers, if not completely my style. We’re the same rank in kendo but he’s 12 years older than me. He also only joined the dojo about 6-7 months ago, so we haven’t known each other that long. We’re friendly but I didn’t imagine us as being particularly close.

I don’t feel comfortable accepting this present because of the expense, but given it’s a custom order, ~~returns might not be an option~~. I already accepted them because he kind of sprung it on me during the break at practice and I panicked. I’m an eikaiwa teacher, so I don’t exactly have the means to reciprocate. I don’t know what to do from here but it’s making me super anxious. Any advice would be appreciated.

TLDR dojomate got me a custom gift that I feel was too expensive for me to accept.

EDIT: I’ve discovered returns are possible on this product, and so if possible I’m curious if anyone knows the polite procedure for giving it back to him.

EDIT 2: Thanks everyone! I’m gonna keep them and get him a new hakama, those are around 10k so it’s a fair okaeshi price.
