I answered before I saw the description. I’m not an English teacher, so I wish that had been an option.
I work at as a male host as a side gig. I only get 1-2 days of work a week but it’s substantially lucrative.
I used to, when I was an ALT.
Now that I’m an actual English teacher, it’s not needed/would just take away more of my precious free time. I thought about it during slow periods, but that’s not really fair to private students, which is what I used to focus on.
Since my second year in Japan (I got here in 2000). Day job was ALT -> ALT supervisor -> university teacher. Finished formal work in March this year.
Side gigs: part-time eikaiwa teacher, Eiken interview tester and essay grader, ELT materials writer, wedding celebrant, part-time uni lecturer.
I run a (not very monetised) website, and have been paid to cover a jiu-jitsu class a couple of times. Also help my wife run a language school.
I teach a few classes a week at a neighboring university. I also have published a couple of textbooks. The royalties bring in a modest side income.
Years ago I was a wedding officiant and got paid 15,000 per ceremony. During busy months I often worked 5 or 6 weddings every weekend. It was the easiest money I’ve ever made in my life. I only gave it up when I landed my first full-time university gig, as my employer frowned on “unapproved” side work.
Videographer / photographer and also do some extra teaching.
My main job is still at an eikaiwa, which doesn’t have a liveable wage, so until I can go full time at my university job, I don’t have a choice.
When I was an ALT I did research, voice work, and private lessons. Full time teaching, I’m not contractually allowed and too tired. If there was a short term thing I wanted to do without anyone finding out, I’m sure I could but also….too tired.
When I was an ALT, I taught part-time at a eikaiwa in the area a few times a month. When I moved on to full-time uni work, I taught some classes part-time at another nearby uni. I’m not doing part-time at the moment since I don’t really need the extra workload right now.
Juku on Saturdays and during holidays. Makes up for the rubbish salaries of an ALT.
Regular job: ALT
Side Gig: Sports Event Staff
Doesn’t pay too much but I have a few licenses for sports that require extra officials. I get paid about $50 each time to help and watch a sport that I love. Also get tons of free stuff from reps and have made quite a few friends. Many times I can also work on behalf of the Board of Education from my town and also get the $50 on top for working junior events that local children take part in.
I *was* doing magic shows for parties, but nowadays I never get the time or opportunities to do them.
Sorry if this has been discussed already. A month or so ago there was this news: https://mainichi.jp/english/articles/20240330/p2a/00m/0na/015000c#:~:text=TOKYO%20%2D%2D%20The%20Japanese%20government,until%20the%202028%20fiscal%20year With…
