You have a question. Maybe it’s about finance, maybe it’s about Japan, or maybe it’s about neither of those things. Regardless of the topic, you know that google is right there in the next browser tab, and you know that google can definitely answer your question. So why don’t you just change tabs? It would be so easy. Yet you don’t change tabs. Why? Because you know, deep down, that it’s going to be much more fun to post your question right here, in r/JapanFinance’s Weekly Off-Topic Thread!
Questions on any topic are welcome. That means everything from “what will the JPY exchange rate be next month?”, to “what will the JPY exchange rate be next year?”, and even “should I exchange my USD for JPY yet?”. Just keep in mind that the sub’s rules still apply, and don’t forget to give yourself the “US Taxpayer” flair if it applies to you.

I’m still getting those quite frequently and it still annoys me a lot: predatory emails for expats selling unnecessary insurance or promoting expensive foreign private education as if it were the only way to guarantee a future to your child.
The worst aspect is that I only ever ended up on their lists because my embassy freely distributes all our data to political parties, who then happily sell everything to advertisers.
Just learned that dependents living overseas are also tax deductible in Japan. I’ve been here since 2019 and I’ve two dependents back in my home country. Is it worth the effort to go to the tax office to get a refund? For context my total annual comp is around JPY16M. Would do my own research but if anyone has had experience and already done some back of the envelope calculations before I’d like to hear your opinion!
