Who should be the next NJPW Strong Openweight Champion (AEW Spoilers)

With Eddie’s Continental Crown being dismantled, with the loss to Kazuchika Okada. Who should be the person who beats him for the Strong Championship?

While Kingston has been a decent champion and appeared on all the strong shows it would be more preferable if someone on the NJPW roster could take the championship for both a push and to regular see the belt on both Strong and regular shows.

The candidates:

Gabe Kidd: Kingston’s current feud, Kidd seems like the immediate choice. Appears regularly on strong and Japan shows as well as occasional shows in the UK where he could also defend. Also, with Coughlin’s status up in the air it would be great to have Kidd out of the tag division as strong champion to legitimise him as Finlay’s number 2.

Jeff Cobb: He has been stating that a champion will be in his sights soon. Cobb again competes regularly on both US and Japan shows and this would be a good way for Cobb to have a monster run similar to that of his 2021 push as well as giving him a claim to top spot in UE.

ELP: While probably not soon this would be fantastic. ELP alongside ZSJ are the best placed to take Ospreay’s spot for headline grabbing Gaijin. He is increasingly over with all crowds and can have stellar matches with anyone. He would be an excellent choice to carry the Strong brand. It would also allow for that blow off match with Ishimori that I really want.

Ishii: The least likely, Kingsotn and Ishii have faced off several times in the past. Ishii is very appreciated by western audiences and is a semi regular competitor on Strong. It would be an easy way for more showcase Ishii matches in both Japan and the US.
