Trying or watching Karuta on holiday?

I would love to try or watch some of the Karuta game while I am travelling if possible. Is this possible? I watched the anime and long time ago and would really like to try the sport/game if possible to be taught it somehow?

Otherwise, I would like to watch it somewhere if there is a chance to see real matches. I could only find the national schedule, which suggests the last national event was on the 23rd of March and the next will be late April.

At the very least, I would love to pick up a nice set of Karuta cards to learn the game at home, and maybe also show my Japanese class friends back home to play it together. Are there any nicer types of Karuta cards to look for, or should I just get any one I see? So far I saw a small card set in BIC Kamera in Hakodate but wasn’t sure so didn’t grab it.

I fly back on the 9th of April, and I’ll be in Nagano, Nagoya and Kyoto as well as some smaller places before then.
