PhD in Japan

Hi, I’m a masters student embodied in statistics field in South Korea. I am currently interested in the phd program in Japan since my gf is Japanese. I just want some basic information before I actually dedicate my time for preparation.

1. How is the funding system in Japan? Obviously this would differ by the field, but how is the stipend or the financial aid in the Natural Science in specific?

2. Are PhDs considered as students or employees?

3. What are the avg years of studies for graduation and are there any cases where the school accepts masters degree as prequalified for the PhD program?

4. How much Japanese do the universities require? I can only speak casual Japanese but not fluently enough.

The questions are very broad but it would be grateful just to get a feeling of the atmosphere. So please feel free to inform me about your own thoughts, thank you 🙂
