Proposed Itinerary 27 Sep – 13 Oct 2024

We are off for a family holiday (2A, 12yo boy and 9yo girl) to Japan later this year. We are coming from Australia, so while the travel to and from is long the time zone is only 2 hours behind our local time.

Below is our itinerary as it stands at the moment.

Yes it’s busy and a fair bit of walking… but that doesn’t worry me too much – both did a 13km walk in a day a couple of years ago their stamina is only better now. Would appreciate if you do have any feedback however.

27 Sep – fly into Narita and take N’ex into Tokyo (we arrive at ~7pm so it’ll be come in get dinner (if not fed on the plane) and go to bed after most of a day of flying.

28 Sep – explore Asakusa/Shinjuku/Shibuya
Tea ceremony and kimono experience
Shibuya sky (hoping for a sunset experience)
Various other locations in between those two.

29 Sep – explore Ueno/Ginza
Hoping to see Tokyo National Muesum and get to an act at the Kabukiza theatre

30 Sep – Tokyo Disney

1 Oct – day trip out to Kamakura

2 Oct – travel day between Tokyo and Kyoto (train)

3 Oct – day trip to Nara and Osaka including Osaka castle and Teamlabs

4 Oct – Fushimi Imari in the morning
Then on for a samurai sword muesum and experience in early afternoon

5 Oct – Arashiyama Bamboo Grove/Monkey park/ Kikakuji and Niojo castle. (Plus a few other spots along the way)

6 Oct – Ginkakuji/ Philosopher’s walk/Heian Shrine/ Kiyomizu-dera (plus a few more bits)

7 Oct – travel day between Kyoto and Hiroshima (train)
Use the meipuru-pu to see various sites including Atomic Bomb Dome/ Peace memorial muesum/ Hiroshima Castle

8 Oct – day trip to Miyajima

9 Oct – long travel day!!
Train from Hiroshima to Kyoto
Collect hire car and drive to Kanazawa
Hoping to see Kenrokuen/ Seinsonkaku Castle park and ruins/ Oyama Jinja and Omicho Ichiba

10 Oct in the morning – go to Nomura-ke and Myroyuji
Then drive to Takayama (stopping at Ogimachi castle old site observatory en route)
At Takayama seeing Kusakabe Minjei Guchi/Yoshijima Traditional House/Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan

11 Oct in the morning Miyagawa morning markets/ Sanmachi Dori/ Sanmachi Suji / Hida Open Air Muesum
Then drive to Mastumoto via Hida Great Limestone Cave and Shinhotaka Ropeway

12 Oct in the morning Matsumoto Castle
Drive to Nagano to return car
Train back to Tokyo… maybe go out to National Muesum of Emerging Science and Innovation

13 Oct – very early flight from Haneda to home
