Nikko day trip from Tokyo during Golden Week

I have spent countless hours reading everyone’s threads with must-see things in Japan, and would like to thank you all for taking the time to share your tips.

My husband and I will be visiting Japan during Golden Week (only period possible for our visit!) and want to plan a day trip from Tokyo to Nikko. I did some research and believe the following spots can be visited in one day trip:

1. Shinkyo Bridge

2. Toshogu Shrine

3. Kegon Falls

4. Lake Chuzenji

5. Fanmangafuchi Abyss

Normally, we would choose to go on our own, as we enjoy setting up the schedule on our own on what we want to see, plus the tours I have so far found for Nikko usually include 2 stops.

For this occasion though, I have read several posts about the chaos going on everywhere in Japan during Golden Week. So I was wondering, **(1)** is our schedule too ambitious? and **(2)**, will it be too chaotic for two foreigners to navigate in Nikko, buy tickets, queue in lines / bus etc.? Will the safety of a tour guide actually be worth it, albeit the more limited schedule and less stops?

  1. You definitely do not need a tour guide. I did #1-4 and skipped the abyss(bit of a walk from the main road). Took about ~5 hours.

  2. Yeah, Golden Week impacts soo much on transportation and locations. It’s their holiday, so it’s expected.

I know 1-4 is doable. I’ll be doing this at the end my trip in April, but I have my friends in Tochigi to take me around.

  3. I only went to Toshogu and a couple of nearby shrines. Generally speaking, they are simple and you can go by yourself.

That being said, if you want to know what everything is, a guide could be helpful. English signs are here and there; but it’s always better to have someone explain it to you.
