  1. From the article:

“The survey also found 26.2 percent feel it is difficult for women to play active roles in society”

What a fuzzy concept. Active role in society. What does that mean and do all people answering the survey understand it to mean the same thing?

  2. 63% of Japanese polled.

They polled 3000 people. 57.%1 responded. Of that, 63% (a grand total of 1079 people) said child-rearing is hard, it’s hard for young people to be independent, it’s difficult for women to play active roles in society and are dissatisfied with their work environment. Some expressed concern over the economy.

  3. I mean, nothing for me to comment on as a foreigner here. But isn’t a “struggle” very subjective? What kinda expenses do those households have if a salary that is more than 2 times my salary is not enough?

I say that but the way anual salaries are calculated here is way too vague, add to that how only 1600 people had a valid answer and the fact we don’t know their situation. Before tax? With bonuses? Bonuses before tax? With benefits? Transportation? Help with rent? Paying mortgage? Owning a house? Where in Japan?

Good info to know, but if even such a big percentage in Japan is poor, then we are all doomed.

  4. Salaries barely got higher and everything got way more expensive. Peoples savings are probably getting wiped out. What did they think was gonna happen?

  5. Interesting that about 7m yen is deemed to be tight financially, whereas 9m yen is deemed to be comfortable for families. We started a family and had an unsettled time with COVID and pretty much gone from nearer 9m per year to more like 7m, and it has been pretty tight. Something to remember though if you’re thinking about starting a family.

Edit: should mention I’m in a more central bit of Tokyo.

  6. It’s a rubbish survey. It’s not an unbiased sample. People that feel more stressed out are obv more likely to respond to such a survey.

  7. No word of a lie, did a comparison of my teaching wage here to that of the wage in Thailand and its actually coming out as the same minus the big variation in cost of living in both countries. Absolute madness
