Hakone – Mishima or not ?

Hi everyone,

My husband and I are traveling to Japan in May. We’re going to Hakone from Osaka, staying the night in a Ryokan in Hakone and going from Hakone to Shinjuku on the next day, in the evening (I was thinking of leaving around 5PM depending on the romance car schedule).

We won’t be carrying suitcases (we’ll ship them straight from Osaka to Shinjuku and have backpacks with what we need for those 2 days).

I originally was thinking of going from Osaka to Mishima, getting the Hakone free pass at Mishima station and then going on the Mishima Skywalk. From Mishima I thought we could take the bus to Moto-Hakone to see Lake Ashi & the torii, & then go to Yumoto station & to our Ryokan (which is close to Yumoto station, it’s Hakone Airu).

Or we skip the Lake and go straight to the Ryokan… but I know already that a one hour bus ride after the Osaka to the Skywalk transit will be depressing.

& then I figured we’d do the loop on the next day.

However, it all seems a bit complicated and tiring and it got me thinking : is the Mishima Skywalk really worth all that ? Wouldn’t it be better to just go straight to Hakone and spend the two days there, and make the most of the Ryokan ?

What would your advice be ?

If we’d do go straight to Hakone, what would you suggest we do in Hakone on the first afternoon ? We’re not super interested in the Open Air museum, and we’ll do the loop on the next day.

Thanks in advance !
