Had a baffling encounter in a busy train station this morning, I was in a very tight crowd and felt someone slip their hand in my jacket pocket where my phone was and keep tugging and pulling. I’ve been pickpocketed before in another country so I immediately panicked and was somehow, impossibly fast enough to grab my phone back (I am not a fast nor a strong person), but the hand grabbing it wasn’t letting go. After a yank I’ve now got two phones in my hand—some random girl’s phone and my phone and realize she’d been yelling. I hastily apologize and give it back, and she seemed okay after and as confused as me (I’m a woman too). I can only imagine that maybe the crowd was so tight that she had put her phone/hand in my jacket pocket and it got stuck, and I panicked, thinking I was getting robbed and grabbed her phone by mistake, or it was a genuine pickpocketing attempt. I have no idea why a pickpocket would grab something with their phone in their hand, but I also have no idea how I could have even touched someone else’s phone. There was definitely a hand in my jacket pocket as I felt myself get yanked and I felt it go in. Anyway I feel terrible for accidentally grabbing her phone if it was a genuine accident and have terrible anxiety, so now I keep thinking the po po are gonna track me down and show up at work somehow since I’m a foreigner and they’d obviously take her side, yay catastrophic thoughts. I’m still pretty shaken up about it.
