Because of my spouse’s career, I will be moving to Japan in mid-2025 and likely be there for 2-3 years. We will be in the Fussa area, on the outskirts of Tokyo.
Are tattoos acceptable in public places? I’ve read that onsens, beaches, gyms, etc. are not good places for tattooed foreigners, but I’m more curious about shops, restaurants, museums, shrines, hiking paths, etc. I have a forest scene tattooed over my entire arm, and covering it would require wearing a long sleeve shirt. Is this necessary in public?
I would also accept any other advice on moving to living in Japan for this amount of time, as it will be a very new experience for me never having been outside the US. Advice on managing finances with US banks, getting cell service, language learning, culture, good places to visit, having pets, etc. would all be greatly greatly appreciated! (I do have work, housing, visa squared away though, so I don’t specifically need advice about those particular topics.)
