Everyone in Japan will be called Sato by 2531 unless marriage law changed, says professor

I was one of the people who thought this was an April foola joke but it is not!

  1. I do not understand the logic. Currently you can choose either partner’s name as the married name – I get that “95%” of the time it’s to the husbands. But if, hopefully when, the marriage law is changed, you would still have to choose one of the names for the children, which would likely follow the 95% husband trend.

So while it may be the case that the population is trending towards Sato as a last name, the updated marriage law would have no impact.
