Failure to report foreign tax residency to Japanese bank

I’m a US citizen who moved to Japan last year and opened a bank account through my work. I’ve learned that I was supposed to report my US tax residency to the bank at the time of opening the account and that failure to do this may have criminal penalties.

I did not do this and am wondering what my best course of action is.

Have there been any cases of people being criminally prosecuted for this? Should I inform my bank of tax residency now? Is this a big enough issue that I should get an attorney to try to fix? My income isn’t very high so this would be a big financial burden.

I have reported all income both to the US and Japan and filed an FBAR.
