Is there any hidden etiquette at mcdonald’s im not aware of?

Why is it that not a single japanese person uses the deliver to table service when ordering of the machines? You see this huge line of people waiting for their food just to sit get it and sit down. I’m starting to think i’m breaking some hidden unspoken rule by getting it delivered to my table

  1. My local maccas is always understaffed. I wouldn’t wanna be the only dweeb who demands a staff member bring me my meal when they could be attending to everyone else.

Only time I’ve seen the staff hand out the ‘deliver to table’ numbers is when you show up with a family with small kids.

  2. wtf? Aren’t you thinking ***far too deeply*** into it?

It’s simply a choice. Maybe half the people lined up are doing a to-go order? Maybe they want to use cash instead of credit card? Maybe they just want to think about what they order when waiting in line.

I personally use table delivery every single time I go to McDonalds, but that’s because I want to grab a seat.

No need to think about something as mundane as this. Not everything that occurs within the borders of the nation of Japan is a uniquely cultural phenomenon that can be explained away.

  3. Huh, the one by my office hands it out to everyone all the time. The one near my home doesn’t even seem to have that service.

  4. Don’t walk through the entrance directly in the middle. You have to walk in from the left. Bow once at the register. Clap three times before your order. Firmly hold your hands together 🙏🏽 while the cashier confirms your order. Bow again upon payment.

  5. It’s quicker to wait than to get it delivered.

The food is being made, it just sits in the back for a while until someone can get it to you.

  6. I always use the app to order unless the service is down. Sometimes I use table service but usually pick up at the counter or I’m waiting outside in the car spot.

  7. I always use the app and get it delivered to the table. I get the impression that a lot of people don’t realize that is an option.

  8. May vary by location. I feel like the only person who stands in line because most other people in my city do table delivery. I just feel guilty making someone deliver my food when I’m perfectly capable of getting it myself, especially if they’re busy.

  9. Maybe just a lack of awareness? I see dozens of people standing in line at Starbucks and very few taking advantage of mobile order. I’ve had a few give me amazed looks when I walk in, sit down, and then collect my drink while they’re still standing in line.

  10. I delivered a few orders when I worked at McD here…. But very few times, people usually prefer to wait.

  11. It’s the same with the Starbucks app. I have seen the line out the door and then placed my order through the app and picked up my drink before most people have even ordered. Very satisfying.

  12. I use table delivery through the app, so I don’t need to leave my bag on the seat and walk away. But they don’t give me ketchup for fries.

  13. It’s always interesting when I go to the store to pick up my order in 1 min (ordered via app) then gtfo while there’s 10 people lining up.

  14. Lots do…depending on the location. I didn’t even know it was an option until recently.

  15. My friend used it once, while I got my food normally. I was almost done with my meal by the time hers came.

  16. Many just don’t know about the convenience. I often order on my way using app, and pick up as soon as I arrive.

  17. I would honestly feel very rude using deliver to table service unless there were circumstances. McDonald’s is generally understaffed, and I’ve only been there when it’s been busy recently. I can just wait and take it to my table myself, it’s a McDonald’s so I wouldn’t expect table service in the first place.

If I was disabled, injured, or dealing with very energetic young children I would definitely get tableside service though.

  18. i don’t use it because it is impossible to ask for ketchup for my fries unless i go to the register in person

  19. Some people don’t have McDonald’s very often so they don’t bother with the app therefore don’t know about the service.

Only certain payments can be made on the app. If you want to use cash, your IC card, want to use and get Rakuten points etc. you have to order at the counter.

  20. My husband (Japanese) always does the mobile order, and he’s really into being polite and following manners so I doubt he would do that if he thought it was bothering the staff.
Also I worked at McDonalds for a few years in the UK and doing the table orders isn’t really that bad.
