Question for current Malaysian ALTs

Long time lurker, first time poster. So please let me know if I’m breaking any rules c:
Also, obligatory on mobile.

Hello! I’ve got some questions for my fellow Malaysians who successfully made it to Japan as an ALT.

I am currently applying here and there for ALT and kindergarten teaching positions.
Now, being Malaysian and all, JET and Interac is out of the question. So that leaves me with very limited choices.

Another issue is the requirement of having 12 years of education in English for non-native speakers. I didn’t go to school where the education is fully in English. But I did have Math and Science taught in English for the entirety of my school years.

On to my questions:
1. How did you guys manage to get hired and if it’s through a dispatch company, which company?

2. How did you guys pass the 12 years English education requirement?

Thanks in advance!

Background: I’ve got an BA in English and can speak Japanese (conversational level). Also have the experience as an ALT through internship.

  1. Not from Malaysia, but Brunei! And literally same background as you.
    1. Was ALTing for 6 months last year with borderlink. But have since changed jobs to a private school.

    2. Since I’m already in Japan, yes I passed that requirement! But I had all my classes in English. And I remember borderlink specifically saying it has to be done entirely in English. I had to get verification letter from my schools from elementary to uni. And tbh the letter didn’t go into much detail other than “I learned English at the school for x amount of years”. So if you could ask your school to write something similar you’re good to go maybe.

Hope this helps. All the best.
