Australian on the JET programme for 5 years. I have to go home Sept – Dec for personal reasons. However, my partner, friends, and life are here, and this is where I want to be long term, so I don’t want to mess up my pension, bank, phone, or PR chances.
My spouse and I are planning to marry in a month, and then I was going to join his visa (he is not Japanese or PR, but he is eligible to sponsor me with his specialist in the humanities visa). Ideally, we would receive the Certificate of Eligibility by June, allowing me to apply for the spousal visa by the time I leave Japan end of August. However, the CoE may not come until late July, which is trickier. My current visa expires in late September.
I have to take the flight home no later than the 29th of August. So I am wondering:
1) Are there any issues with him applying for the certificate of eligibility when he will only have a few months left on his visa at that point?
2) If there are delays, could I apply for the spousal visa online (I renewed my visa online last year, and the new card was mailed to me), leave Japan with a re-entry permit, and then have my partner bring the new card to me, and return to Japan on that in December/January?
3) I can also apply for the spousal visa outside of Japan. However, in that case, I won’t have a valid visa within Japan for a few months (I will still have a rental apartment though, in my partners name). Do I need to cancel my bank, phone, pension office, and notify the ward in this case? Will it ruin chances of PR or the 10 year pension requirement?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
