JRPass travel assistance between Tokyo, Hokkaido and Fukuoka

I’m currently finalising my itinerary and I need help finding the best way to travel from Tokyo to Hokkaido, Sapporo and then to Fukuoka during early May.
I have done some research concluding that the best way to do this is starting from Tokyo, taking the JR Tohoku Shinkansen and heading to the Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station, which will fetch us a train straight to Sapporo.
Afterwards, when my friends and I finish exploring the place, we thought of just doing the reserve (going back to Tokyo) and then straight to Fukuoka. I have calculated that the time it will take us to go from Hokkaido to Fukuoka this way is approximately 14 hours.
I would like to hear people who have more experience using the Shinkansen as it’s our first time visiting the country. Do you think there is a more efficient way to travel through these places? We will all have JRPasses active during the whole time we are in transit, if that helps. We will be travelling during the night to reduce time loss and combine sleep with our trip.
