Does Nuro 光 really not accept Debit card, or did the rep just not know better?

Just moved to a new place and am trying to switch to a better Wi-Fi, since I’ve been using that garbage WiMAX thing for years.

This place has a sign on it that Nuro 光 is compatible here, and I was thinking of choosing them anyway after hearing good things, so I called them up to see about a contract.

In the call the guy told me that for payment, only Credit Card or Docomo/AU/Softbank payment is accepted. I asked if debit card was okay, and he said that it wasn’t, and that there’s no option for paying at the conbini or direct deposit either.

I don’t have a credit card because I’ve only heard about how hard it is to get accepted for one as a foreigner, and I also don’t use any of the big three cell providers because they are a rip off from what I can tell (been using OCN Mobile, a subsidiary of Docomo, though I’m thinking of changing that to UQ as well).

Anyway, I’m wondering if anyone who didn’t have a credit card when signing up to Nuro 光 just tried going in with a debit card and it worked, or if they found some other kind of work around. Mainly wonder this because I’ve definitely had instances where something asked for credit and I was able to just use my debit card instead… I know debit isn’t all that huge in Japan for whatever reason so maybe he just said what he thought was true?

Or, am I best off just biting the bullet and try to find a credit card that will let me sign up.
