Is it alright to fold yen?

I’ve seen a lot of youtube videos that say yen should be kept unfolded. My brother also said he kept his bills unfolded when he visited Japan.
I rarely carry cash with me in the US so I have a [smaller wallet](https://bellroy.com/products/folio-mini?color=black&material=leather_rfid#slide-1) that has a small section for coins in the center. I actually usually put my cash in the center coin section since I almost never have loose change plus my wallet gets really bulky with coins inside. I have to fold up bills 3x in order for it to fit in the center section though. It also can get pretty bulky when I put a lot of bills in the center section.

So do Japanese people/merchants really care if their yen is folded? Would it be okay to have my bills folded 3x or should I only fold it once and store it in one of the 2 open pouches? I already plan on getting a coin pouch but should I also look into getting a longer wallet so cash can stay unfolded?
