Anywhere to go after Kyoto (alone)?

I may be fortunate enough to meet up with some friends for a few days in Kyoto and Nara in June. I’m thinking of continuing to travel around for a few days alone and I would like some recommendations for some easy to reach must-see places.

I’ve been to Japan four times with travel partners but I’ve stuck to mostly big touristy cities/places. I don’t think I really need another big city experience. I loved the calmer slower-paced and just smaller areas like Nara and parts of Kyoto. I am hoping for one or two spots to spend a few days in each maybe, easy to get to with some kinda rail line, not too, too many hours away from Kyoto/Osaka area. I love nature but I also don’t want to be so off the beaten trail that I get lost. I have no Japanese language ability. Hidden gems are appreciated!

I did just a little googling and there are just so many options that I want to talk to people that have actually done them. I’ve read that Takayama might be a good option. Anyways thanks for the advice!
