In English, I would say I speak to my pets with the lowest level of formality, often using slang to refer to my pets (“dude”, “bro”, etc.).
However in some cases I’ll also be very polite when referring to animals that I see, e.g. “hello Mr. Frog, how are you doing today?”
So I was wondering what this looks like in Japanese? Do people jokingly add “-sama” or some other honorific when talking to pets?
I would imagine there’s no standard or “right” way to do it, given how I’ve seen people refer to pets like they were their own children and also people who just see a pet as a pet.
