Weekly discussion and small questions thread

In response to user feedback, this is a recurring thread for general discussion about learning Japanese, and for asking your questions about grammar, learning resources, and so on. Let’s come together and share our successes, what we’ve been reading or watching and chat about the ups and downs of Japanese learning.

The /r/Japanese rules (see [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/about/rules/)) still apply! Translation requests still belong in /r/translator and we ask that you be helpful and considerate of both your own level and the level of the person you’re responding to. If you have a question, please check the subreddit’s [frequently asked questions](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanese/?f=flair_name%3A%22FAQ%E3%83%BB%E3%82%88%E3%81%8F%E3%81%82%E3%82%8B%E8%B3%AA%E5%95%8F%22), but we won’t be as strict as usual on the rules here as we are for standalone threads.

  1. Hello there. I hope you are having a good day. A little while back, I got in contact with a Japanese speaker. And I am curious about the grammar they provided. They said it was pretty easy and that it’s mainly the kanji that are hard. Here is what I got from them:

    1.) Sentence is subject-object-verb.

2.) Obvious use of appropriate particles when needed.

3.) Just put the infinitive verb. No need to conjugate.

Is this all correct? I just want to make sure while I was thinking about it. Thank you.

  2. Need some help here to find out the Japanese song in this lofi music, or what simply the lyrics are: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-wyvjVsTc8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-wyvjVsTc8)

The song is used as sample in the music so it’s really muffled. I can make out some words but not enough for lyrics search
    Thanks in advance:)

  3. So my friend and I made a bet can you guys help me

So my friend said that there is no Japanese word that ends with a vowel and I wanted to prove him wrong so we made a debt. But he said that it has to be an actual word and not a title that comes after a name. Can you guys give examples of Japanese words that when pronounced do not end with a vowel or do they just not exist because I am betting money on this

  4. I want to get a tattoo that means something like “courage” in japanese kanji. I did a lot of research and came to either getting “勇” or “勇気”. I wanted to make sure whether this is correct or if theres a better set of letters to use? Or what is the difference between the meaning of the two?

Ive heard way too many horror stories of people getting foreign letters wrong in their tattoos, so i just want to be sure.

    edit: extra question

  5. Hello! I was having a discussion with a friend about the use of ― (長音符) in katakana. I was under the impression that it was only used for long vowels, but my friend says that it can be used after ン i.e. ン― to stretch out the sound. Is that correct? If so, are there any examples of this? Thanks!

  6. Can someone help me understand the nuances of 〜につれて, 〜にしたがって, 〜に伴って, and 〜とともに?
I just can’t seem to grasp it.

  7. Some hints to improve my listening skills? Main purpose is to pass jlpt n4 next December (but of course jlpt is just a way to stick my efforts towards a goal..). Is it ok to listen to jlpt tests several times and then look at the full script? Any suggestion is welcome!
