Hi all,
Hopefully this type of post is allowed. I’m looking for some advice.
I got married 3 months ago and my grandmother has just sent me almost 2.4 million yen as a wedding present.
I’ll be honest I am pretty financially illiterate and up until this point have just been content living with 500,000yen in the bank in case of emergencies and living off of any income above that.
Now I just got the money this morning and I have been reading up and researching what I need to do, what I should do and what I can do but I feel a bit overwhelmed.
As I am on a spouse visa, my understanding is that I will need to pay gift tax (According to the information I’ve found online, 15% with 100,000 deductible amount).
Aside from that I’m at a bit of a loss as to what to do. I want to continue living on income as I have up until this point and not really touch it.
From what I’ve read here, opening an iDeco and Nisa account would be a good idea but that still leaves quite a bit left in the bank.
I guess what I want to ask is…am I on the right track?
Additional information that might be relevant:
I will be moving to a different prefecture towards the end of this year. I started working as a freelancer last year (I filed my first tax declaration last month). I have been in Japan for 9 years and will probably apply for permanent residency next year when I become eligible.
