Japanese pronunciation of Chinese place names

I have a question regarding how Japanese people would pronounce the names of places like cities etc. in China. Do they pronounce it similar to the modern Chinese pronunciation or do they read the characters with their usual 音読み reading?

For example:

Shanghai = 上海市 -> ジョウカイシ or シャンハイシ ?

Beijing = 北京市 -> ホッキョウシ or ベイジンシ?

etc.
