Will my cash/credit card be suspended while I’m waiting for my new visa?

I tried to called my bank but they weren’t able to tell me what will happen (I’m very confused). So when my visa runs out and i just have that stamp on the 在留カード, will i be able to use my bank accounts or not?…
Thank you.

  1. I had my bank stop my account when my visa extension took too long and I went a couple weeks over my expiration date. I went in person and filled out a form for an extension, so maybe you can do so before your extension goes past your original expiration date.

  2. In the future, you can apply for your extension (renewal) months in advance to avoid such issues.

  3. They have your SOR expiration on file, so probably expect a letter requesting you to update them by DateX or they will freeze your account.

So if you’re resident card has naturally expired, it’s not impossible to appear on their radar.

Best advice for the future…. You can extend up to 3 months before your current SOR expires.

  4. I think that depends on the bank.I renewed my visa like 3-4 times (3 year visa) and my bank never asked for my zairyu card. My bank is MUFG. I have 5 cc and none of them asked for my zairyu card either.

EDIT: I see that a lot of people have their bank account frozen. I guess that depends on what kind of visa you’re on too. Mine is long-term (3rd gen japanese)

  5. I was in the same situation. I informed my bank and they said I’d still be able to use my card.
    Definitely bank dependent though.
