Stuck in Ginowan

Flew into Okinawa for the Ryukyu Kaiensai fireworks at Ginowan. Show was amazing but now we’re stuck with no way back to our Airbnb. DiDi and Uber keep saying there are no cars available and now Google says the buses won’t be able to take us either (it’s 9:45pm right now).

Any advice?

Edit: we finally were able to hail a taxi who would take us home. The first one literally laughed in my face. I showed him the address in Japanese and he laughed some more.

The second taxi was a lovely old man who was amused by my very limited Japanese + Kanji knowledge from knowing Chinese. I was able to put in the address myself and we got home! Super cool old man. He has a huge collection of American Western DVDs. Our savior!

Also thank you to the local redditors who offered to drive us!

  1. I switched my name in the DiDi app to a kanji spelling and it’s helped with actually getting rides on the busy weekend nights. Otherwise I would see cabs all around on the app and no one would take my ride.

  2. Yeah, if you can’t use the apps here there’s literally always taxis going nonstop on the main roads. Most times it’s faster than waiting for a rideshare.
