Do I have to know how to write with kanji when taking the N3 exam?

I wanna take it in December as an experience before taking N2 wich is my goal, but tbh I can only recognise kanjis, and not actually write them in paper from memory 🙁

  1. JLPT is all multiple-choice, so no. If you can recognise a kanji from its kana readings and understand which contexts they apply in, plus a few of their synonyms, you should be fine.

For contrast, here’s the [official example questions](https://www.jlpt.jp/e/samples/n3/index.html) from the JLPT website. All multiple choice. Question 2 is the closest you get to needing to know how to ‘write’ kanji, and all it is is picking the right one from a list.

This is kind of what happens when you create a test that’s machine-read (this is why they ask you to use an HB pencil)
